Internship Student Expectations

Before you arrive:
  1. It is important to understand that English companies are slightly different than American companies. Your attitude will determine the sort of experience you have. Flexibility, openness to new experiences, enthusiasm and patience are key to the internship experience. It’s up to you to fit in with the organization, not them with you.
  2. Your placement may not fit your request perfectly. We strive to fit you in to a company where we know you will have a good experience, in a company as close to your original internship request as is possible.
  3. Students in England -generally - do work experience for only a couple of weeks. It is unusual to be an intern for as long as you will be. This means that you will get to be trusted and valued more than the average intern, but it may take a few weeks for them to fully acknowledge your abilities. The company will most likely test your enthusiasm with small, mundane tasks at first. Your positive reaction to these will most likely lead to bigger and better tasks.
In London:
  1. Students will be expected to attend all orientation and intern meetings in London, followed by an interview with the organization offering the internship.
  2. After the orientation you will have a short, informal meeting with a member of the IE team and your faculty supervisor. At this meeting you will find out which company you have been placed with and when your screening interview is. Please do not make any other arrangements prior to this time as it WILL NOT be possible to change your interview time. The interview will take place during your normal working hours (Mon, Tue, Thu & Fri).
  3. Students will be expected to work the hours determined by the company. Usually these will be 9.30am-5.30pm, but are entirely at the discretion of the company and may well be longer. NB: Some internships may involve working in the evening or at the weekends.
  4. Students will work for the host company in a non-paid capacity.
  5. Students are expected to fund their own travel to and from work. Any reimbursements made by the company are entirely at their discretion.
  6. During the program, the student will be expected to meet with his/her professor and a member of I.E. staff at mid-term to report his/her progress in the internship.
  7. Students must not leave work before 5.00pm on days when evening lectures or classes are scheduled, unless location of the internship necessitates leaving earlier.
  8. Students should not assume that they will be allowed a mid-term break. This is dependent on the company’s needs and can be taken only with the permission of the supervisor.
  9. Absences from work (other than illness) are not permissible, for example, due to friends and relatives visiting.
  10. Students should phone their supervisor and the I.E. office if they cannot attend work due to illness.
  11. Personal phone calls/emails should not be made from work. Any social arrangements or travel plans should be made outside of working hours.
