Apple Market
This touristy market sells handcrafts and curios. Located in Covent Garden Piazza, North Hall. Open daily from 9am- 5pm.
Brixton Market
South of the Thames; take tube to Brixton station (bus is slow). Great
prices on fresh meat in shops. Good fruit/veg, including many stalls
freaturing Afro-Caribbean products, clothing, fabrics/ Exciting
cultural mix among sellers and buyers. Open Monday to Saturday (Wed.
morning only). Busiest Friday/Saturday- go before noon if you want to
avoid big crowds.
Bermondsey Market
This curious market has mythic status because it's reputedly legal to
sell stolen goods here before sunrise which maybe (or maybe not) explains
why most of the action is over by 8am. Knick-knacks like bowling balls,
hatpins, costume jewelry, and porcelain sit alongside a better
selection of silverware. Located in Bermondsey Square just outside
Borough/Bermondsey tube. Open 5am - 1pm Friday.
Camden Market
This covered market houses stalls for fashion, clothing, jewelry and
tourist tat. Located on the corner of Camden High Street and Buck
Street. Open 9am - 5:30pm Thursday through Sunday.
Camden Canal Market
Located further north and just over the canal bridge, this market has
bric-a-brac from around the world. If you're pushed for time, this is
the bit to skip. Open 10am - 6 pm daily.
Camden Lock Market
Right next to the canal lock with diverse food, ceramics, furniture,
oriental rugs, musical instruments, designer clothes and much more.
Open 10am - 6 pm Saturday and Sunday, with indoor stalls open 10am- 6 pm
daily.
The Stables
Just beyond the Railway Arches, the Stables is the best part of the
market, with antiques, Asian artefacts, rugs and carpets, pine
furniture and 50's and 60's clothing. Located on Chalk Farm Road,
opposite Harland Road. Open 8am - 6pm Saturday and Sunday.
Church Street Market
Near Edgeware Road tube station; good bus service (414 from Cromwell/ V
& A). Fruits, vegetables, fish, etc. much cheaper and fresher than
supermarkets. Also clothing, luggage, shoes, linens. Stalls line the
street and shops are good. Open Tuesday through Saturday (greatest
selection Sat. Morning).
Jubilee Market
Monday is for antiques and collectibles, Tuesday to Friday for general
tat, and Saturday and Sunday for quality crafts. Located near Covent
Garden and Southampton. Open 9am - 3pm Monday, 9am- 5pm Tuesday through
Sunday.
Portobello Market
Easy walk to Notting Hill Gate, market begins nearby.
Or take bus (52, 70) or tube to Notting Hill Gate, Ladbroke Grove, or
Westbourne Park. Huge set of markets, variable hours and specialties:
antiques, household goods, clothing, food (organic food market at the
Westway, Thursday 11-6).
Shepherd's Bush Market
Direct by bus (49 from Kensington High Street) or walk through Holland
Park and down Holland Park Road, just past (N and S) Shepherd's Bush
Station. Shepherd's Bush Green is nice place to rest, eat, etc. Huge
market, international sellers and clients. Meats, fruit/veg, also
clothing. (One shop announces products "from five continents"-
Jamacian/Indian/Brazilian spices, cornmeal, etc.) Open Tuesday,
Wednesday, Friday, Saturday (8:30-6:00); Thursday 8:30-1:00; best
selection Friday or Saturday morning.
Spitalfields Market
Shoreditch or Liverpool tube or walk north from Bishopsgate. The usual
foodstuffs, but also t-shirts, jewelry, music. Open Monday-Friday but
Sunday is the real market with great selection of foods, crafts,
organic products.
