If you intend to bring a laptop computer there are a few things that you will need to do:
- Power Cable - all electrical power in the UK is 220V rather than the 110V in the US. Check the ac/dc converter on your power cable to see if it will accept 220V power.
- If it does not accept 220V, you will need to bring a power converter (converts 220v to 110V) and adapter (allows the converter to plug into a UK power socket). Be sure to check that your power cable will plug into your converter. If you have a 3 prong power plug you may also need a 3 to 2 adapter (about 50 cents in the US but very hard to find in the UK).
- If it accepts 220V you only need a converter that will allow you to plug into a UK socket. Another solution is to wait until you arrive and purchase a UK cable (about 9 pounds) for your AC/DC converter from a local computer store.
- USB Drive - consider purchasing a USB thumb drive. This will allow you to easily transfer files between your computer and another.
- Wireless card - if your computer does not have a wireless card and you want to take advantage of wireless access from coffee shops and Internet Cafes, you should purchase one before you leave. Although wireless cards are readily available in the UK, all computer equipment and supplies are more expensive in the UK than in the US.
